FORT DRUM, N.Y. (April 17, 2024) – Soldiers with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (LI), participated in the Holistic Health and Fitness class inside the battalion classroom to improve running and overall health techniques on Fort Drum, New York.

As society shifts towards decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behaviors continue, the need for programs like H2F becomes even more clear. This class provides Soldiers with the guidance, support, and resources needed to improve their fitness and overall health in a sustainable manner.

“Twenty percent of Soldiers don’t fulfill the first two years of their contract, so the problem with that is that the Army is bleeding out all of its experience,” said Mark Taysom, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade H2F program director.

The H2F class empowers Soldiers to achieve their fitness goals and prevent injuries by teaching proper techniques, offering personalized workout plans, and providing motivation.

“The Army’s traditional approach of doing more and pushing harder has proven ineffective. It’s time for a new mindset that prioritizes sustainable training methods to ensure the majority, not just a few, can thrive and succeed,” Taysom said.

Not only does focusing on fitness have physical benefits, but it also positively impacts mental health, stress management, and overall well-being.

“A lot of people have a very hard time running … not because running is hard but because running can cause injuries,” said Sgt. Josiah Clark, an information technology specialist with HHBN. “You want to leave your body in the best condition, and if you can improve upon the mechanics, that will help. That’s going to be more impactful.”

Physically fit Soldiers are better equipped to handle the demands of their job and are less likely to experience physical or mental health issues.

According to Taysom, the H2F class aims to equip Soldiers with the necessary tools and knowledge to maintain their physical and mental health in an ever-changing world.

Through education and training, Soldiers are empowered to make healthier lifestyle choices and prioritize their well-being, ultimately enhancing their performance and effectiveness in their military roles. This holistic approach to fitness and readiness helps to ensure that Soldiers are prepared to meet the demands of their duties and uphold the standards of the military.
