Tom Lilly Earns 500th Career Win as Women’s Tennis Sneaks Past Air Force, 4-3

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Creighton women’s tennis head coach Tom Lilly earned his 500th career victory on Saturday afternoon as the Bluejays squeaked past Air Force, 4-3, at the Choice Health & Fitness center in Grand Forks, N.D. 
 
Lilly, the all-time winningest coach in Creighton tennis history, became just the fourth coach in Creighton history to collect 500 career victories. He joins long time softball coaches Brent Vigness (819) and Mary Higgins (564), as well as head baseball coach Ed Servais (618) as the only coaches to secure 500 wins at Creighton. 
 
With the win, Creighton improves to 2-0 on the year, while Air Force falls to 0-3 overall. 
 
Sophomore Valerie Negin and freshman Ana Paula Martinez got doubles started with a quick 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles position, but Air Force answered with a 6-1 and 6-4 victory at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to earn the first point of the afternoon. 
 
In singles play, senior Kate Krueger was forced to retire due to an injury, which gave the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage. How exercise can improve your mental wellness

As Toronto experiences a particularly gloomy January, many may be wondering what they can do to give their mental wellness a boost.

Catherine Sabiston, a professor in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE), says physical exercise is one potentially important strategy.

“If people can engage in small bouts of physical activity throughout the day – even just a minute or two at a time – and build up to 10 to 20 minutes per day, that is beneficial,” she recommends.

A Canada Research Chair in physical activity and mental health, Sabiston directs KPE’s Mental Health and Physical Activity Research Centre (MPARC). The centre studies the connections between physical activity and mental health, and develops and evaluates interventions to promote physical activity and mental wellness among people who are at risk of inactivity and mental health problems. It also runs a six-week program called MoveU.HappyU that provides customized coaching and training aimed at reducing the stress and anxiety of students through physical movement.

Siksika Nation students kickboxing their way to improved mental health

After a quick warmup, students at Many Guns Boxing and Fitness strap on their boxing gloves and their shin guards.

Forming a circle around their instructor, Tawny Big Bull, they await their first instruction.

“You’re going to jump into your stance,” he says, lifting his fists beneath his chin. “You’re going to throw a jab-cross.”

Students partner up and begin the combination, smiles on their faces, some giggles when they forget their footwork. Their breath picks up as they move around the room, punching, kicking and blocking.

The class has become a regular scene on Siksika Nation, about 100 kilometres east of Calgary. 

Participating students from the Siksika Outreach School, which offers individualized supports to at-risk youth, bus over to the fitness facility every weekday for one hour to take part in a kickboxing class. About 18 students are currently enrolled.

“When you come here, sometimes some people would be sad or angry,” said Shyles Three Eagles, who’s taken part in the classes for about four months. 

“When they come here, they have the option to let that all out with the kickboxing. And by the time they leave, they usually are a lot better in their mental health than when they arrived.”

Improving mental health was the original goal of the program, said Bruce Dobbin, principal of the school. But it’s done much more. It’s helped with confidence, motivation and even school participation. 

Some students’ school attendance has gone from 50 to 90 per cent, he said. 

“They’re learning that self-discipline and just setting goals, and they’re learning it transfers to not just sports or kickboxing, it can easily transfer to their own lives and their own barriers and challenges and schoolwork,” he said.
