Georgetown’s animal shelter is a fixture in the community, working with schools, businesses and senior living facilities to educate citizens on animal care and to take in lost and abandoned pets. The shelter cares for adoptable dogs and cats, and also offers foster opportunities. After more than 25 years of funding its own shelter, the city is exploring a partnership with the Williamson County shelter to increase shelter space and better accommodate population growth for both the city and the county. A bond was approved in November 2023, and plans are being finalized.

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter cares for lost and abandoned animals in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Hutto, Leander and other areas in Williamson County. Their stated mission is to “provide a safe haven, with compassionate and humane treatment, for the lost and unwanted pets in our jurisdiction.” The shelter works to educate the public on issues surrounding animal welfare, like spay and neuter, trap, neuter and return programs and pet safety. Adoptions, foster and volunteer opportunities are available.
